SOLD Competes to Join the Girl Effect!
Confession: we here at The SOLD Project have been inspired by (and more than a little jealous of) The Girl Effect since we first saw their first video when they launched in 2008. Since then, our admiration (and jealousy) has only continued to grow.
Why? Because the Girl Effect has spread like wildfire and become the hub and inspirational catalyst for advancing the cause of adolescent girls at international forums like the Clinton Global Initiative, TED, and the UN.
But also, sometimes, it feels like the Girl Effect communicates our own heart and vision better than we do. Watching their videos and reading their website is one extended experience of “YES! EXACTLY! This is brilliant!” interspersed with moments of “Man, why didn’t we think of making this?!?”
The idea behind the Girl Effect is astoundingly simple and profoundly compelling: invest in a girl and she’ll do the rest. The Girl Effect is committed to “harnessing the unique potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves and the world.”
In Thailand, we’ve been witness to the girl effect in action for years. Girls like Cat, Dream, Nan, and so many others are living proof that investing in a girl’s future can change everything—not just for them, but for their families, too. Unofficially, we’ve been part of the movement since before it had a name. Now, finally, we have the chance to make our union official.
During the month of November, the Girl Effect is hosting the second annual Girl Effect Challenge…and SOLD has been handpicked to compete.
If we win, The SOLD Project will officially be part of the Girl Effect for the upcoming year, which would be both an incredible honor and a significant financial help, opening us up to potentially tens of thousands of dollars of additional funding through the Girl Effect Foundation. (To put it in perspective, the Girl Effect Fund raised more than $375,000 in 2011.)
But we need your help.
At the end of the month, the six projects with the highest number of unique donors will be selected. Last year, some of the winning organizations had over 800 unique donors, so that’s where the bar is set. It’s high, but we can do this!
The SOLD Project could never have become the success it is without you. It’s because of your incredible, enthusiastic support that we’ve grown from one scholarship student to more than 130 in just four years. It’s because of you that school drop-out rates have plummeted from more than 50% to less than 5%. It’s because of you that, in the last four years, not one child in our program has gone into prostitution…and EIGHT girls have gone to high school. You’ve already made an incredible difference.
So give. The dollar amount doesn’t matter—$10 is all it takes, so anyone can make a difference. Then, invite 10 of your friends to give $10, too. Ask your mom to give. Your uncle, your sister, boyfriend, girlfriend, professor, boss, barista, accountant, mailman—everyone you know. But it all starts with you.
You start the Girl Effect. Go.
The challenge runs from November 1, 2012 through November 30, 2012, and at that time the winners will be selected.
The Girl Effect is about you using your voice, your talents, and your community to help girls help themselves—and, as a result, everybody else [...] The math is simple: Girls + Girl Champions = Something Way Bigger Than All Of Us.
