SOLD Intern Receives Award from Polaris Project

The Polaris Project recently awarded former SOLD intern Maia Sciupac the 2010 Spring Star Activist Award for her dedication to the fight against human trafficking.

Carrie Shaffer, SOLD’s intern coordinator, says she was impressed by Maia’s ability to “utilize her passion in tangible ways, such as creating a radio show to increase awareness about human trafficking issues.”

During her internship, Maia says she “learned about prevention through education and organized and hosted a film screening of [SOLD’s] documentary.”  According to Maia, it was her experience with SOLD that led her to California Against Slavery, a movement to get human trafficking initiatives on California’s 2012 ballot.

Today, Maia hosts an online radio show raising awareness about trafficking through interviews with legislators, law enforcement officials, and even SOLD staff. Maia interned with us in the spring of 2010 and was featured on our re:ACT page earlier this year.

Congratulations from all of us here at The SOLD Project, Maia!
