Woman Fighting Trafficking Named CNN’s Hero of the Year

November 23, 2010

News ArticleAfter eight weeks of online public polling, Anudraha Koirala was named CNN’s Hero of the Year at last night’s star-studded awards ceremony. Koirala’s organization, Maiti Nepal, has been rescuing girls from the India/Nepal border area since 1993.  The total:  an estimated 12,000 women and children who are no longer sex slaves.  In addition to a safe house, Maiti Nepal offers education, life skills training, and care for HIV/AIDS victims.

Upon receiving the award, Koirala said:

“This is another responsibility to me to work with all your support… We have to end this heinous crime. Please join hands with me to end this crime… We need to do this for all our daughters.”

Watch the announcement of Koirala’s win here. She begins speaking at around 2:45.  There is a lot of clapping, then at 4:10 she begins to speak about the two young people who nominated her for the award. Speaking of them and the young people she works for, she says, “[The youth] are the ones who are going to build the next generation.”
